The 1st Climate and Water Forum at HKUST

The aim of the CWF is to facilitate an annual dialog among scientists, engineers, public and private enterprise and government entities to address emerging threats from the changing climate and environment, the depleting availability of clean water, the urge to identify renewable energy to replace fossil fuel, to reduce uncertainty and anxiety for the next generation that will inherit the world.

The 1st CWF includes 3 clusters:

I. Challenges and opportunities

Cluster I focuses on addressing at least one of the following main questions or beyond:

• What are the current challenges in climate and water systems that human society is facing?

• What are missing in the research fields or disconnection between academia and non - academia when it comes to solving the emerging climate and water problems?

• What are the opportunities for the academic society to advance our understanding of nature and built system , to extend the application of our knowledge in real actions?

II. Technical advances – data, tools, technology

Cluster II focuses on introducing new tools and approaches that transcend multiple disciplines. As smart monitoring and intelligent data processing and analyzing tools become more available to the vanguard of scientific progress, this cluster serves more like a mini workshop, where the participates expect to learn more about “how” than “what”, e.g., how to find the data/technology, how to use the method, how to interpret the results.

III . New understandings and exciting results

In cluster III, we invite experts to share their most recent results that contribute new understandings of the variabilities and risks in Earth’s climate and water system. With the timely sharing of new findings, we wish more ideas to be exchanged among scientists, graduated students, policymakers and other parties.
